Banson NYC Summer Fashion Camp

This prpgram provides educational tours of the fashion industry in NYC to students interested in pursuing the field. A link to the website  about the program is below.

The days are spent touring fashion showrooms, exhibits and design studios, attending seminars pertaining to the field and participating in educational shopping trips. The evenings are filled with fun activities like eating at hip restaurants in the city, relaxing at The High Line and enjoying popular shows in the theatre district. During the summer we offer this same type of program as a high school fashion summer camp. A flyer to give you more specific information about the camp is provided below.

The focus of the program is to teach the students the fundamentals of the fashion industry through hands-on activities and advice from insiders and leaders in the business. This is not your conventional trip to NYC…it’s truly an eye-opening week for any fashionista to learn more about what they have been learning in the classroom.

If interested in the camp, register for more information on the website.

Be the Change Educational Youth Conference

Dear students,
I want to make you aware of an exciting learning opportunity.
The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) and the Student Career Alternatives Program are hosting the third annual Be the Change Youth Convergence in Atlanta this July.  The convergence is based on the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and designed to give youth knowledge and organizing tools to create positive change in their communities. The agenda is packed with exciting and educational activities designed to teach about issues Dr. King identified as key (such as violence, racism, and poverty), as well as skillbuilding workshops to teach about how to eliminate those ills. The knowledge that youth gain from this convergence will benefit them and their communities for years to come.

The event will be held at the Horizons School in Decatur July 29-31, 2011.  There is a fifty dollar registration fee, but travel and registration scholarships are available and no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

AFSC would greatly appreciate it if you could mention the convergence to your students and give them the
brochure and registration form.  We would also be eager to come to your school and give a brief, 5- to 10-minute presentation in a class or club meeting to talk about what will happen at conference and the values behind it.  We look forward to your reply.

Please send an email to afsc.bethechange@gmail.com if you would like to register or to learn more.

Sincerely,

Dell MacLean

Emory Pre-College Summer Program

Emory's Pre-College Program, a summer academic program for rising high school juniors and seniors, is accepting applications. This year, the program offers two lab courses: "The Chemistry of Energy" and "Nanomaterials: From Electronics to Medicine". Each course is taught in state-of-the-art Emory laboratories.

"The Chemistry of Energy" Study renewable and non-renewable forms of energy such as ethanol, biofuels, wind, solar, oil and coal in a laboratory setting. This class explores the history, science and practical applications of each type of energy in context of the intersection between the energy problems facing our society and the solutions science has to offer. You'll build solar and fuel cells, visit Emory's new energy-saving LEED-certified buildings and attend on-campus events related to sustainable foods.

"Nanomaterials: From Electronics to Medicine" This lecture and lab course investigates the relationship between molecular structure and physical properties. Students will study alternative energy sources such as solar cells and fuel cells in a laboratory environment with a specific focus on nanocrystalline materials with interesting electrical and optical properties. The lab allows students to test the performance of such materials, many of which are found in everyday appliances and electronic devices.

*Must be at least 16 years of age to enroll in lab courses.

University of Georgia: Pre-College Summer Program

At the UGA Pre-College Summer Program, we give rising juniors and seniors in high school the chance to experience the rigor of college-level academics and meet the challenges of campus living.  During their two weeks on campus, UGA Pre-College students will:

  • Attend challenging academic classes with University of Georgia faculty and instructors
  • Meet admissions professionals and receive guidance on the competitive college admissions process
  • Learn to balance the demands of college-level courses with extracurricular activities
  • Live away from home and experience the independence and responsibility of college life
  • Leave feeling more academically, emotionally and socially prepared to tackle their first year of college

The first few semesters can set the tone for a student's entire college career. UGA Pre-College provides students with the confidence and experience they need to quickly adjust to campus life and begin their college years on the best possible footing.

This year's program will run from July 8-23. Students will participate in a three-day orientation before beginning their two-week non-credit courses with UGA faculty and teaching staff. The preferred deadline for applications is May 6. After that date, applications will only be accepted if space is still available.

Many of our Pre-College students are the hard-working "go-getters" you know. They are already preparing for college by taking AP and IB courses, preparing for the SAT, and exploring their college options. These students want the advantages a Pre-College experience can provide - experience working at a college level, potential faculty recommendations and the chance to arrive on campus their freshman year and hit the ground running.

The other students we look for are those who need a little "push" in the right direction. Pre-College can be an extremely valuable experience for students who got off to a rocky start in high school, or whose GPA has them teetering on the edge of acceptability at their first-choice school. In addition to getting a feel for the rigor of college academics, our Pre-College workshops will encourage these students to begin thinking seriously about college and what they have to do to get there.

For the student who is serious about getting into college, UGA Pre-College is the perfect opportunity to get a head start on making this important life transition. 100% of last year's Pre-College students reported feeling more prepared for their first year of college academics and for living on their own.

Jen Schumann

Vanderbilt University: Pre-College PAVE Program

PAVE is a six-week summer pre-college program designed to strengthen the academic skills of students who are planning to enter a college engineering, pre-medical, science, or technology program. If you are an eleventh grader and planning to take advanced placement or honors mathematics and science courses, the pre-college PAVE program will fortify your senior year and potentially improve your ACT, AP, SAT and TOEFL test scores while increasing your chances for admission when you apply to college. If you are a graduating high school student and are planning to attend any institution, this program not only exposes you to campus life, but also provides you with the experience to overcome the rough spots you may encounter.

In addition to strengthening your background, PAVE can help you decide if a technology-based degree is really the field for you. As a participant, you have the opportunity to improve your problem solving skills, technical writing skills, computer application skills, and laboratory skills by performing experiments in the sciences, pre-med and engineering disciplines. If, after your undergraduate degree, you are considering obtaining a business, economics, engineering, journalism, law or medical degree, you will benefit from having the experience that PAVE provides.

The 2011 PAVE program is open to high school students who will be in the 11th grade (class of 2012), 12th grade (class of 2011) or PG year during the 2010-2011 school year and runs from June 20, 2011 to July 29, 2011. Please note that every year a number of students who attend PAVE have to arrive late (e.g. making up snow days) or leave early (e.g. the next school year starts early). If you are in this situation, make-up and wrap-up sessions will be provided.

We enthusiastically encourage you to call our friendly staff to discuss how the PAVE program meets your specific goals and objectives. Please note that admission is on a rolling basis.

Founder's Program Objectives: "To provide a superior academic foundation for an undergraduate degree, comprehensive career insight for a bachelor degree and beyond, a non-summer school atmosphere, a diverse student body, and a well rounded program for one of the best summers of your life." John Veillette, 1990.
